SBU-Coal was founded in 2006 as SBU leading holding company to meet the challenges for the effective extraction and processing of coal, in compliance with industrial and occupational safety requirements. 9,056 people are employed with SBU-Coal.

SBU-Coal is one of three leading coal industry companies in Kuzbass. The company supplies Russian and foreign markets with coking and power-generating coal.

Over 60 percent of its coal is exported.

SBU-Coal is among the top leading coal mining industry investors in Russia. The coal mines “Salek” (November 2004) and “Yuzhnaya” (April 2009) were established with the private company’s funds. The coal strip mine “Vostochniy”, with the production capacity of 3 mil tons/year, was brought into operation in Prokopyevsk District in August, 2010.

The wash plant “Chernigovskaya-Koksovaya” with the expected conversion capacity of 4.5 mil tons/year is under construction (operations beginning - the end of 2011). Construction on the coal strip mine “Mayskiy” has already begun in the Prokopyevsk District.

Balance reserves of the company are over 1,874 billion tons of coal. Including 357 million tons of coking coal (ranks K, KS, KO, IOS), and 1,517 billion tons of power-generating coal (ranks SS, OS, DG, D, G).

SBU-Coal structure includes companies working in various areas of the Kuzbass Region. Three mines: “Yuzhnaya” mine (production capacity - 2.4 mil tons/ year), “Kiselevskaya” mine (0,76 mil tons / year) and “Listvyazhnaya”(3 mil tons/year).
Seven coal strip mines: “Chernigovets“ (5.9 mil tons / year), “Razrez Kisilevskiy” (2 mil tons / year), “Vostochniy” (3 mil tons /year), “Energetic” (1,1 mln tons/year), “Kuprinskiy” (1mln tons), “Sibenergougol” (1 mln tons), “Prokopjevskiy ugolniy razrez” (0,5 mln tons/year).

SBU-Coal structure also includes the production of explosives, building rubble, coal preparation, etc.

The wide range of coal quality calls for a high demand from SBU-Coal products in the domestic as well as foreign markets.

Annually, SBU invests at least $ 50 million on construction of new collieries, coal mine and strip mine modernization. Technical coal machinery equipment is acquired from the top leading British, German, Polish, and Chinese manufacturing companies. Particularly, in the beginning of 2010, 240-ton BelAZ trucks and 30 m3 electro-hydraulic excavators were purchased for the coal strip mine “Chernigovets” and for “Kisilevskaya” — 160-ton BelAZ rock trucks were purchased.

SBU-Coal investment policy for provision of ensuring safe working conditions is a matter of high priority. “Comprehensive purpose-oriented programs for safety and emergency resilience at the
Kuzbass coal facilities” are implemented at the company’s enterprises. Personal protection equipment, flammability air quality monitors, fire extinguishers, etc. are purchased in accordance with this program. About $ 3,5 million are allocated annually by the company to ensure the improvement and industrial safety of working conditions.
